I am not insulting my reading audience. This post is for the birds and bird lovers. I have a backyard with trees and flowers and I
love to watch the birds, squirrels and chipmunks. I am especially fond of Cardinals and hummingbirds. In our landscaping we have a Service Berry Tree right up against our deck. Every year from Memorial Day through the 4th of July the birds, especially the cardinals, have a feast on the berries. It wouldn’t be so bad but they bomb our deck when they are through eating. Wouldn’t you think they would appreciate what we are doing and do their “business” out in the yard? We put up with it because we feel like we are doing our part by feeding the birds. It seems a small payment for the enjoyment and color they bring into our lives. hummingbirds are another fascination for me. We have a hummingbird feeder. I keep it filled. We have several hummingbirds that frequent the feeder. Before I put it out in the early summer I will see them flitting where it is usually positioned. How can these tiny birds that migrate down south remember where I hang my hummingbird feeder? I can’t even remember where I hang my clothes from day to day but they know where the feeder should be and I had better not be late about putting it out. They are very combatant. It doesn’t matter that there are 4 seats at the diner, if another hummingbird dares approach the feeder when it is occupied there will be a mid-air hummingbird battle.
If you are like me, you will enjoy seeing the hummingbirds. We also have impatiens and geraniums planted and they buzz around them so they must get nutrition from these sources as well.
Here is a simple recipe for hummingbird food.
Hummingbird Food
1 Cup of boiling water
1/4 cup of sugar
Mix these together until the sugar is dissolved. I usually make a double batch. Don’t put too much food in your feeder at one time. It can get rancid in the hot summer weather. If it is not emptied by the hummingbirds then change it after one week. Keep the extra refrigerated. Your little friends will love you for it.
That’s all for today. It is a beautiful day to sit on the deck and enjoy nature.
Until next time…From our Butcher Block to your Table (or feeder as the case may be).
